Gear/Shift Rail Assemblies & Support Component

Refer to Fig. 11 for component view.

Assembly

1. Install input and output shaft gear assemblies (A).
2. Install the following onto the gear clusters:
a. Install 1st-2nd shift rail (190).
b. Install lockpin (196) and retain using petroleum jelly.
c. Install 3rd-4th shift rail (184).
d. Install 5th shift rail (179).
e. Install reverse shift rail (180).
f. Install shift gate (181) and disengage roller (182).

Refer to Figs. 25 and 26 for gear cluster, shift rail installation and engaging transaxle in gear shaft support components.
In addition to a hydraulic press, tools J-35824, J-36031 and J-36182 are required to conduct the following procedure.

1. Position gear cluster/shift rail assembly (A) onto tool J-36182-1. Align shift rail and shaft pilots onto fixture.
2. Align bearing bores in case with shaft pilots, then install transaxle case (85).
3. Install new bearing (86) using tool J-35824 and press.
4. Install new bearing (93) using tool J-35824 and press. Ensure bearings (86 and 93) are completely seated. Push rails (A and B) to engage and secure transaxle in 4th and reverse gears.
5. Install new retainer (88) using J-36031 or equivalent. Torque retainer attaching screws to 50 ft. lbs.
6. Place transaxle back into N.
