Subject: WINDNOISE AT DOOR OUTER BELT AREA (SERVICE PROCEDURE)

Models
Affected: 1988-89 GRAND PRIX MODELS
An area of windnoise on 1988-89 Pontiac Grand Prix coupes may be under the door beltline reveal molding and mirror patch.

(Note: The 1989 Grand Prix Service Manual, page 10-5-8 Figure 10, is an incorrect illustration of the belt molding, as it does not show the front position of the molding which fastens under the side mirror.)
1. To repair this condition, remove the door trim panel, mirror, mirror patch, and lock rod cover in order to access rear outer belt seal strip retaining screw.

2. Apply cloth-backed tape as a protective cover over the painted surface of the door frame applique to protect finish during removal of the outer belt seal strip.

3. After outer beltline reveal molding screws have been removed, start at the rear of the molding and pull up and outboard to remove.

Figure 1:

4. With molding removed, apply a bead of paste silicone along the full length of the molding in the molding cavity as shown in Figure 1.

5. After reinstallation of the molding to the door frame, position the rear flap of the outer belt seal strip downward at the rear applique. Position the front flap of the outer seal strip behind the metal flange (NOT outside of the flange) at the mirror patch.

Figure 2:

6. With paste silicone fill the cavities behind the outer belt seal molding to the door frame at the mirror patch as shown in Figure 2.
7. Reinstall mirror patch, mirror and trim pad.
