Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain coolant.
2. Scribe alignment marks, then remove hood.
3. Remove air flow tube from air cleaner and throttle valve, then the air cleaner assembly. On turbocharged models, remove turbocharger assembly.
4. Disconnect necessary electrical wiring, then the throttle and T.V. cables.
5. Relieve fuel pressure as follows:
a. Connect fuel pressure gauge tool No. J-34730-1 or equivalent to fuel pressure connection. Wrap shop cloth around fitting while connecting gage.
b. Insert bleed hose into suitable container and open valve to bleed system pressure.
6. Disconnect fuel lines.
7. Remove AIR pump belt, then the serpentine drive belt cover and belt.
8. Disconnect radiator hoses at engine.
9. Remove A/C compressor bolts from front bracket.
10. Remove power steering pump and position aside.
11. Disconnect heater hoses from engine.
12. Disconnect brake booster vacuum supply line.
13. Disconnect EGR from exhaust.
14. Raise and support vehicle.
15. Remove A/C compressor bolts at rear bracket, then position compressor aside.
16. Remove flywheel cover, then disconnect starter and position aside.
17. Remove torque converter bolts, then the transaxle bracket.
18. Remove engine front mount retaining nuts.
19. Disconnect exhaust pipe at crossover, then lower vehicle.
20. Remove engine torque struts, then the coolant recovery bottle.
21. Disconnect crossover pipe at left manifold.
22. On except 1991-92 Lumina models, pull engine assembly forward and support in this position.
23. On all models, disconnect crossover pipe at right manifold.
24. Disconnect bulkhead connector.
25. On except 1991-92 Lumina models, remove engine support and allow engine to roll to normal position.
26. On all models, remove engine to transaxle attaching bolts, attach lifting device to engine and support transaxle.
27. Remove engine assembly.
28. Reverse procedure to install.
