Timing Cover: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Remove serpentine drive belt tensioner, then the alternator.
3. Remove serpentine drive belt cover, then the drive belt.
4. Detach power steering pump and position aside.
5. Raise and support vehicle.
6. Remove inner splash shield, then the flywheel cover.
7. Remove starter, then, using torsional dampener remover tool No. J-24420 or equivalent, the crankshaft balancer.
8. Remove serpentine drive belt idler pulley, then the oil pan.
9. Remove lower timing cover attaching bolts, then lower vehicle.
10. Disconnect radiator hose at water pump and heater coolant hose from cooling system fill pipe.
11. Disconnect bypass, overflow and canister purge hoses.
12. Remove upper timing cover attaching bolts, then the cover.
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean sealing surfaces on front cover and cylinder block.
b. Use new gasket and be careful not to damage sealing surfaces.
c. Apply sealant and torque timing cover attaching bolts as shown, Fig. 7.
