Engine: Service and Repair

1. On all models, remove fuel pump fuse from fuse panel, then start and operate engine until it stalls. After stalling, crank engine for approximately 3 seconds to deplete fuel pressure in fuel lines.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable and engine ground strap.
3. Drain cooling system, then disconnect radiator and heater hoses.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly.
5. Disconnect engine wiring harness at bulkhead connector.
6. Disconnect electrical connectors at brake cylinder, cooling fan relay, cooling fan motor, windshield wiper motor and coolant temperature switch. Also disconnect electrical connectors at A/C compressor clutch and A/C relay, if equipped.
7. Disconnect electrical connector from ECM (Electronic Control Module) and pull harness through bulkhead connector.
8. On 1990-91 models, remove vacuum hoses at fuel injection, MAP sensor and canister.
9. On all models, disconnect throttle cable at bracket and throttle body.
10. Disconnect shift control cable at transaxle.
11. Disconnect power steering hoses at pump.
12. Raise and support front of vehicle, then disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold and position aside.
13. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect transmission fluid cooler lines.
14. On all models, disconnect fuel lines. Place shop towel over fuel line and fitting when disconnecting.
15. Remove heater hoses at heater core.
16. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
17. Remove front brake calipers with brake hoses attached and suspend from wheel opening with suitable wire.
18. Discharge A/C system, then disconnect refrigerant lines from A/C compressor, then disconnect A/C compressor electrical connectors.
19. Ensure vehicle is properly supported, then remove two center bolts from suspension support. Remove one bolt from each end of suspension support, then loosen the remaining bolts.
20. On models with automatic transaxle, remove transaxle rear strut.
21. On all models, remove transaxle front strut.
22. Support front vehicle by positioning jack stands under radiator support.
23. Position suitable jack and a wooden board (4 x 4 inches x 6 foot) across width of vehicle at rear of cowl.
24. Raise vehicle slightly and remove jack stands positioned under radiator support.
25. Position a suitable dolly with 3 wooden blocks (4 x 4 x 12 inches) as supports, under engine and transaxle assembly.
26. Carefully lower vehicle to position engine and transaxle assembly on dolly.
27. Remove remaining bolt at left and righthand sides of the front suspension supports.
28. Scribe line indicating position of strut to steering knuckle. This scribe line is used during installation to reset camber adjustment.
29. Remove engine and transaxle mount to bracket attaching bolts, then steering knuckle to strut bolts.
30. Raise vehicle, allowing engine, transaxle and suspension to remain on dolly. Prior to raising vehicle, ensure all necessary electrical wiring, cables, linkages and hoses are disconnected to permit engine and transaxle removal.
31. Separate engine from transaxle.
32. Reverse procedure to install. When installing strut to steering knuckle, align scribe lines made during removal.
