Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

If only the transaxle is to be removed, the transaxle end shield along with the main shaft and driveshaft should be removed from the transaxle casing.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner.
3. Remove clutch cable at release lever attaching clip and nut.
4. Remove universal joint attaching clip and bolt.
5. Disconnect speedometer cable, speed sensor and back-up lamp electrical connectors.
6. Loosen shift rod clamp attaching bolt.
7. Remove upper transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
8. Install engine support fixture tool J28467-A or equivalent.
9. Raise and support vehicle.
10. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
11. On 1990-92 models, remove splash shield.
12. On all models, disconnect interference suppression capacitor cable at transaxle.
13. Press both ball joints from steering knuckle.
14. Disengage axle shafts from transaxle casing.
15. Remove transaxle cover at end shield.
16. Disengage both drive axles at transaxle using tool J36639 or equivalent.
17. Mark relationship between transaxle driveshaft and cluster gear, then remove snap ring from end of input shaft.
18. Pull out left drive axle and support.
19. Support transaxle using suitable jack.
20. Remove left front mount bracket attaching bolts, then remove bracket.
21. Remove left rear mount bracket to transaxle attaching bolts.
22. Remove lower transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
23. Lower jack while guiding right drive axle out of transaxle and remove transaxle from vehicle.
24. Reverse procedure to install. Torque all attaching points to specifications.
