TURN SIGNAL SWITCH HOUSING ASSEMBLY, STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY, STEERING COLUMN HOUSING & IGNITION SWITCH HOUSING ASSEMBLY
Disassembly
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove steering wheel horn cap and horn leads.
2. Remove nut, retainer and steering wheel, then unclip contact ring from wheel if necessary.
3. Remove steering column as previously described under REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
4. Remove alignment bushing from lower end of shaft assembly, then cancelling cam spring from upper end of shaft assembly.
5. Remove washer head tap screws and signal switch housing assembly.
6. Compress spring retainer and upper bearing spring with special tools No. J 36667 and J 23653-A or equivalent.
7. Remove retaining ring, spring retainer, upper bearing spring, inner race seat and inner race.
8. Pull tilt lever and tilt column all the way up.
9. Insert a Phillips tip screwdriver into square opening in spring retainer, push down and turn left to release retainer and tilt spring.
10. Remove spring retainer and tilt spring.
11. Remove two pivot pins using special tool No. J 21854-01 or equivalent.
12. Turn lock cylinder to the Run position and pull tilt lever to release column housing from housing support.
13. Remove shear bolts, shear bolt washers and ignition switch housing from column housing as follows:
a. Drill off head of shear bolts down to shear bolt washers with a 1/4 inch drill bit.
b. Separate washers and switch housing from column housing.
c. Remove threaded end of shear bolts from ignition switch housing using vise grips.
14. Remove lock cylinder from ignition switch housing, ignition switch retaining screw and ignition switch assembly.
15. Remove steering shaft assembly from housing support.
16. Remove tilt bumpers using pliers.
17. Remove support screws and support housing from jacket assembly.
18. When necessary, the steering shaft assembly may be serviced as follows:
a. Prior to separation of upper shaft and lower shaft, note relationship of upper shaft with lock bolt slot at 12 o'clock position and lower shaft pinch bolt groove at 7 o'clock position. Refer to this orientation for proper reassembly.
b. Position upper shaft 90° to lower shaft and separate.
c. Rotate centering sphere 90° and remove from upper shaft.
d. Separate sphere halves and joint preload spring.
Assembly
1. Install housing support to jacket assembly with support screws and torque to 12 ft.lbs.
2. Install tilt bumpers to housing support and snap into place, then install steering shaft assembly into support housing.
3. Lubricate bearings in column housing with lithium grease and install column housing onto shaft assembly and housing support.
4. Lubricate pivot pins with lithium grease and install until bottomed in housing.
5. Pivot pins must be staked to housing after installation. Stake each pin at three equally spaced locations.
6. Pull tilt lever and tilt column all the way up.
7. Lubricate tilt spring with lithium grease and install tilt spring with spring retainer as follows:
a. Make sure that spring engages locating tab on support housing.
b. Insert a Phillips tip screwdriver into square opening in spring retainer, push down and turn right to lock in place.
8. Install ignition switch to ignition switch housing ensuring retaining pin engages ear on ignition switch. Ensure that the tab on the lock cylinder shaft and the slotted opening on the ignition switch are in alignment, the lock cylinder and ignition switch must be in the Run position prior to installation.
9. Install ignition switch retaining screw and hand tighten, approximately 2.7 lb in of torque.
10. Install lock cylinder into ignition switch housing.
11. Install ignition switch housing to column housing using ``new'' shear bolts and washers and torque until bolt head separates from body, approximately 15 lb ft
12. Turn lock cylinder to the Off-Lock position and remove key.
13. Rotate steering shaft assembly until lock bolt engages and locks steering shaft into position.
14. Install inner race, inner race seat, upper bearing spring and spring retainer.
15. Compress retainer and spring with special tools No. J 26667 and J 23653-A or equivalent.
16. Install retaining ring in groove on upper shaft.
17. Install signal switch housing to steering column housing with washer head tap screws and torque to 30 lb in
18. Install alignment bushing over lower end of steering shaft and into lower end of jacket assembly.
19. Install steering column as previously described under REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
20. Install cancelling cam spring on steering shaft.
21. Install contact ring if necessary, steering wheel, retainer and nut and torque nut to 13 lb ft
22. Install horn leads and cap, then connect battery ground cable.
STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY
Disassembly
Assembly
1. Lubricate centering sphere halves and joint preload spring with lithium grease and install spring between sphere halves with ends of spring in notches.
2. Lubricate sphere end of upper and lower shaft with lithium grease and install sphere into upper shaft and rotate sphere 90°
3. To ensure proper operation, align upper shaft and lower shaft by placing lock bolt slot on upper shaft at 12 o'clock position and pinch bolt groove near end of lower shaft at 7 o'clock position.
4. Position upper shaft 90° to lower shaft and install upper shaft to lower shaft and straighten.
