Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Disconnect throttle valve cable from throttle and transaxle.
3. Disconnect selector cable from transaxle lever.
4. Remove selector cable bracket, leaving cable attached to bracket.
5. Disconnect electrical connectors from speed sensor, [1][2]torque converter clutch and neutral safety switch.
6. Disconnect vent hose at top of transaxle.
7. Remove starter support bolts and starter from transaxle.
8. Disconnect speedometer drive cable from transaxle.
9. Remove top three engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
10. Install engine support fixture No. J28467-A with adapter No. J228467-70 or equivalent.
11. Raise and support vehicle.
12. Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
13. Remove lower ball joint retaining clips and stud nuts, then separate ball joints from steering knuckles using ball joint tool No. J36226 or equivalent. Disregard ``This Side Towards Wheel'' marking on tool. Tool must be turned to opposite position when used on these vehicles.
14. Remove both axle shafts from transaxle.
15. Disconnect oil cooler lines from transaxle.
16. Remove converter cover attaching bolts and the cover.
17. Mark relationship between flywheel and torque converter for installation reference, then remove torque converter-to-flywheel attaching bolts.
18. Remove left transaxle mount attaching bolts and the mount.
19. Support transaxle with a suitable jack, then remove rear transaxle mount attaching bolts and the mount.
20. Remove right transaxle mount attaching bolts and the mount.
21. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine attaching bolts, then carefully lower transaxle from vehicle.
22. Reverse procedure to install refering to SPECIFICATIONS/MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS/TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS chart.
