Turbine Shaft






1. Inspect turbine shaft seal rings for nicks, cuts or damage. Do not remove oil seals, unless replacement is required. If replacement is required, proceed as follows:

a. Using a knife, cut and remove solid Teflon seal ring from turbine shaft.

b. Lubricate, then position seal installer J-29696-1, or equivalent, over turbine shaft.

c. Position solid oil seal ring over seal installer and carefully slide seal down to the seal ring groove. Remove seal installer too.

d. Lubricate inside of seal sizer J-29696-2, or equivalent, push tool down over seal and turn.

e. Remove tool, ensuring seal is properly seated in the groove.

2. Inspect snap ring, journals and snap ring grooves for damage.

3. Inspect turbine shaft for restricted oil passages.

4. Check for free operation of check ball in turbine shaft. Replace if damaged.

5. Inspect cup plug for damage, replace if damaged.

6. Install overdrive sun gear onto overrun clutch hub with chamfered side up.

7. Align clutch plates in overrun clutch housing, then install overdrive carrier assembly into overrun clutch assembly. it may be necessary to turn overdrive carrier assembly counterclockwise to seat it properly in overrun clutch.

8. Install turbine shaft into overdrive carrier assembly, then new snap ring onto turbine shaft. A new snap ring must be installed as damage to transmission may occur if old snap ring is used.

9. Hold turbine shaft, then install overrun clutch and overdrive carrier assembly, into case.

10. Inspect fourth clutch plates for damaged tangs, wear, heat damage or delamination.

11. Inspect backing plate for scratches or damage.

12. Lubricate, then install fourth clutch plates, into transmission case in the following order; steel plate, composition plate, two steel plates, then a composition plate.

13. Install backing plate, then the snap ring. Ensure composition-faced plates turn freely.

14. Install oil deflector plate, with tangs facing upward, then the overdrive unit.
