LO & Reverse Clutch Housing

1. Compress Lo and reverse clutch spring retainer, then remove snap ring, retainer, waved spring, Lo and reverse clutch piston, outer and inner piston seals and clutch apply ring.
2. Inspect Lo and reverse clutch housing for plugged or damaged feed hole, scored or damaged bushing and worn or chipped clutch splines.
3. Inspect clutch apply ring for cracks or distortion.
4. Inspect piston for wear, cracks or damage.
5. Inspect spring retainer for damage.






6. Inspect composition and steel clutch plates for tang damage, wear, heat damage or determination. Replace components as necessary. Refer to image, for clutch plate usage chart.






7. Install clutch apply ring onto Lo and reverse clutch piston.
8. Install outer and inner seals onto piston with seal lips facing away from clutch apply ring, using universal seal installer J-26744, or equivalent. Lubricate seals with clean, specified transmission fluid.
9. Install Lo and reverse clutch seal protector J-25011 or equivalent, into Lo and reverse clutch housing.
10. Install Lo and reverse piston into housing, then remove seal protector.
11. Install waved release spring, retainer with cup facing down, then compress retainer and install snap ring.
12. Lubricate, then install Lo and reverse clutch plates into transmission case, starting with a flat steel plate and alternating steel and composition plates.
13. Install waved steel plate, then the housing to case spacer.
14.Install Lo and reverse clutch housing assembly into transmission case, using installer J-28542, or equivalent. Align clutch housing feed hole with case feed passage. If Lo and reverse clutch housing does not seat completely past case snap ring groove, proceed as follows:

a. Remove installer J-28542, then install rear sun gear and input drum, rotate input drum to align roller clutch and clutch hub splines.

15. Install Lo and reverse clutch housing snap ring, bevel side up. It may be necessary to loosen output shaft support fixture. Position snap ring gap opposite of parking lock actuator rod.
16. Install case cup plug seal and seat against clutch housing.
