Subject: INSIDE HANDLE TO DOOR LOCK RODS ON FRONT DOORS, DISENGAGED FROM LOCK (NEW PARTS AND PROCEDURE)

Affected: 1990 6000 MODELS
Some early 1990 6000 models may exhibit an inside handle to lock rod that becomes disengaged at the lock end during operation. This condition may be due to a rod with an incorrect bend length at the lock end.
If the condition is present, it may be corrected by using the following parts and procedures:
Inside Handle To Lock Rods: Right - 10160496 Left - 10160497
Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
Procedure:
1. Remove trim panel and water deflector.
2. Using a 3/16" drill bit, drill out the inside handle attaching rivet and remove handle.
3. Rotate clip on lock end of rod to disengage, remove rod and discard.
4. Install rod into clip on lock lever and rotate clip to retain rod.
5. Install inside handle on forward end of rod, position handle properly on inner panel and fasten using a 3/16" rivet.
6. Operate all lock rods to insure proper operation.
7. Reinstall water deflector and door trim panel.
