Transaxle Case

1. Inspect case assembly for damage, cracks, porosity or interconnected oil passage.
2. Check for visible leaks which would indicate small holes or voids in casting. To check, plug openings to passage being checked and fill passage with a thin fluid such as lacquer thinner. If fluid level goes down, it indicates a leak. Repair area with an epoxy repair kit, or replace case.
3. Inspect exhaust vents to make sure they are opened.
4. Inspect case lugs, intermediate servo bore and snap ring grooves for damage.
5. Inspect for damaged or stripped bolt holes. Repair as necessary.
6. Inspect case bushing for damage or scoring.
7. Inspect converter oil seal. Replace if necessary.
8. Inspect drive sprocket support roller bearing for damage. If replacement is necessary, proceed as follows:
a. Position transaxle with sprocket side up.

b. Using bearing puller tool No. J-26941 and a slide hammer, remove roller bearing assembly, Fig. 34.
c. Inspect drive sprocket support roller bearing bore for damage.

d. Using bearing installer tool No. J-28677, install new roller bearing assembly, Fig. 35. Bearing must be installed with identification up.
e. If a new roller bearing is installed, the race on the drive sprocket support must be checked for damage or wear. If replacement is necessary, the drive sprocket must be replaced.
f. Rotate transaxle to righthand axle side.
g. Remove converter seal.
h. Place hand under sprocket support, then remove case bolts using No. 40 torx bit tool No. J-25359-5 and remove drive sprocket support.
i. Reverse procedure to install noting the following: Use a non-hardening sealer on each bolt and refer to "Torque Specifications Chart" for torque values.
j. Install new converter oil seal.
9. Inspect parking pawl shaft cup plug for damage. If replacement is necessary, proceed as follows:
a. Position transaxle with oil pan side up.
b. Remove cup plug using a suitable screw extractor.
c. Drive in new cup plug using a 3/8 inch punch.
10. If parking pawl replacement is necessary, proceed as follows:
a. Remove parking pawl retainer.
b. Remove parking pawl shaft, pawl and return spring.
c. Inspect parking pawl for cracks or damage.
d. Inspect return spring for deformed ends or coil.
e. Inspect pawl shaft for damage.

f. Position spring on parking pawl and place in case, then install parking shaft retainer, Fig. 36.
11. Inspect governor pipe for damage, cracks or possible points of leak. To replace, proceed as follows:
a. Remove governor pipe retaining clamp.
b. Remove right hand axle end first. If necessary, use a large screwdriver to pry pipe.
c. Install governor pipe. Coat both ends with Loctite or equivalent compound.
d. Install governor pipe retainer strap and screw. Refer to "Torque Specifications Chart" for torque values.
12. If necessary to remove 3rd oil cup plug, proceed as follows:
a. Cut off 1/2 inch (13 mm) off a No. 3 easy out, then use easy out to remove cup plug.
b. Install cup plug using a 1/4 inch (6 mm) rod until it seats in bore.
13. Inspect manual shaft oil seal for damage. To replace, proceed as follows:
a. Rotate transaxle with oil pan side down.
b. Remove oil seal.
c. Using a 9/16 inch (13 mm) socket, install new seal with oil seal lip up.
14. Inspect axle oil seal for damage. If necessary to replace, remove seal and install new one using a suitable seal installer. If seal guard is damaged, the seal must be replaced. Use care to avoid damaging the guard during installation.
