Fuel Filter: Service and Repair
ALL WHEEL DRIVE
AWD Fuel Filter Location:
REMOVAL:
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
^ Clean both fuel feed line connections and the surrounding areas at the fuel filter before disconnecting to prevent possible contamination of the fuel system.
3. Using a back-up wrench, disconnect the fuel feed line and the rear fuel feed line assembly from the fuel filter.
4. Slide the fuel filter out of the fuel filter bracket.
5. Remove the filter from the filter shield.
^ Check the fuel line O-rings for cuts, nicks, swelling or distortion. Replace as necessary.
INSTALLATION:
1. Position the filter shield on a new filter.
2. Position the new filter in the fuel filter bracket.
3. Connect the fuel feed pipe and rear fuel feed pipe assembly to the fuel filter.
^ Use a back-up wrench to prevent the filter from turning.
^ Tighten the in-line filter fittings to 27 Nm (20 lb.ft).
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position for two seconds, then turn it to the OFF position for five seconds. Again turn the ignition switch to the ON position and check for fuel leaks.
8. The ECM will need to relearn the IAC valve pintle position following battery reconnect, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE.
TWO WHEEL DRIVE
Fuel Filter:
REMOVAL:
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
3. Remove the filter bracket attaching screw and filter bracket.
4. Grasp the filter and one fuel line fitting. Twist the quick-connect fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Repeat for the other fuel line fitting.
WARNING: Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.
5. Using compressed air, blow out the dirt from the quick-connect fittings at both ends of the fuel filter.
6. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings by squeezing the plastic tabs of the male end of the connector and pull the connection apart. Repeat for the other end.
INSTALLATION:
WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire or personal injury:
^ Before installing a new filter, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube end of the filter and the fuel level meter assembly. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak. (During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated).
^ If the new fuel filter or filter line is nicked, scratched or damaged during installation, it must be replaced.
1. Remove the protective caps from the new filter.
2. Install the new plastic connector retainers on the filter inlet and outlet tubes.
^ Install in the same positions as on the old filter.
3. Connect the quick-connect fittings:
a. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male ends of the filter and fuel level meter assembly.
b. Push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place.
c. Once installed, pull on both ends of each connection to make sure they are secure.
4. Align the fuel filter bracket on the frame with the brake line mounting bracket and install the filter bracket mounting screw.
5. Tighten the filler cap.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position for two seconds, then turn it OFF for five seconds. Again turn it ON and check for fuel leaks.
8. The ECM will need to relearn the IAC valve pintle position, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE.
