Fig. 28 Removing Oil Cover:

Fig. 29 Measuring Oil Pump Gear Backlash:

1. Remove oil pump as described under ENGINE MECHANICAL/COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR PROCEDURES/OIL PAN.
2. Remove four attaching bolts, then separate the driven gear cover and screen assembly from the oil pump, Fig. 28.
3. Position oil pump housing to engine with original shim(s), then install attaching bolts and torque to specifications.
4. Using dial indicator assembly, measure oil pump driven gear to drive gear backlash, Fig. 29. Crankshaft should not move during check. Backlash should be .0091 to .0201 inch. To decrease backlash, remove shims. To increase backlash, add shims.
5. After obtaining proper backlash setting, rotate crankshaft 180 degrees and recheck backlash setting.
6. Remove oil pump from engine.
7. Install oil pump cover and pickup tube to oil pump housing. Torque oil pump cover to oil pump housing attaching screws to specifications.
8. Install oil pump and shims.
