Oxygen Sensor: Service and Repair

The oxygen sensor has a permanently attached pig-tail and connector. This pig-tail should not be removed, since removal will affect proper operation of the oxygen sensor.

1. Disconnect electrical connector from oxygen sensor.
2. Using a suitable wrench, carefully remove sensor from the exhaust manifold or pipe. The oxygen sensor may be difficult to remove when the engine temperature is below 120°F. Use caution, since excessive force may damage threads in exhaust manifold or pipe.
3. If a new sensor is being used, install the sensor into the manifold or pipe.
4. If the old sensor is being reused, coat the threads with anti-seize compound, then install it into the manifold or pipe.
5. Torque oxygen sensor to specifications, then reconnect electrical connector.
