3T40 (125/125C) Automatic Transaxle

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. On Cutlass Supreme and Grand Prix models, remove coolant recovery reservoir.

3. Disconnect shift control and TV cable from transaxle.

4. Remove throttle cable bracket, then disconnect brake booster hose if equipped.

5. Remove both torque struts from engine.

6. Remove left torque strut bracket, then disconnect and plug oil cooler lines from transaxle.

7. Install engine support fixture No. J28467-A with adapter tools No. J28467-90 and J36462 or equivalents.

8. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.

9. Remove calipers, rotors and lower engine splash shields.

10. Remove nuts and washers from driveshafts, then separate hub/bearing assemblies from axle splines using hub spindle removal tool No. J28733 or equivalent.

11. Remove hub/bearing assembly to knuckle attaching bolts. If equipped, remove ABS sensor attaching bolts and position sensors aside.

12. Remove hub/bearing assemblies from vehicle.

13. Using axle shaft removal tool No. J330O8, extension tool No. J29794 and slide hammer tool No. J2619-01 or equivalents, separate right and left axles from transaxle.

14. Remove axle assemblies from knuckles, then disconnect tie rod ends and ball joints from steering knuckle.

15. On Lumina models, drain oil and remove oil filter, then remove and sup- port A/C compressor. Do not disconnect refrigerant lines.

16. Remove heat shield from rack and pinion, then disconnect electrical connector.

17. Remove main engine wiring harness to transaxle case retaining bolts.

18. Secure rack and pinion unit to exhaust system, then remove rack and pinion to frame attaching bolts.

19. Remove power steering line to frame retaining bolts.

20. Remove engine and transaxle mounts from frame.

21. Support frame with jackstands, then remove frame bolts. Remove frame and jackstands from vehicle.

22. Remove flywheel access cover, then the torque converter bolts.

23. Remove starter retaining bolts, then support starter with wire. Do not allow starter to hang from electrical wires.

24. Disconnect battery ground cable from transaxle and remove transaxle fill tube bolt.

25. Remove transaxle mount bracket, then lower vehicle.

26. Disconnect transaxle electrical connector and remove fill tube.

27. Using engine support, lower left side of engine approximately four inches.

28. Raise and support vehicle.

29. On Cutlass supreme and Grand Prix models, remove fuel line bracket from transaxle.

30. Position a jack under transaxle, remove transaxle to engine bolts and lower transaxle.

31. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:

a. Torque auxiliary oil cooler bolt to 18 ft lbs; and nut to 89 in lbs; bracket to transaxle front stud to 35 ft lbs; bracket to transaxle rear bolt to 61 ft lbs; bracket to transaxle top stud 40 ft lbs; console shift control assembly nut to 18 ft lbs; converter cover to 89 in lbs; engine to transaxle brace bolt to 35 ft lbs; fill tube to 18 ft lbs; flywheel to torque converter to 44 ft lbs; mount to bracket to 22 ft lbs; neutral switch to 18 ft lbs; shift control bracket to transaxle to 18 ft lbs; shift control lever to transaxle nut to 15 ft lbs; TCC solenoid to 125 in lbs; transaxle cooler pipe clip bolt to 35 ft lbs; transaxle to engine bolt/stud to 55 ft lbs.

b. Adjust shift linkage, TV cable and fluid level.
