Fig. 5 Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:
Fig. 2 Intake Manifold Tightening Sequence:
Fig. 3 Exhaust Manifold Tightening Sequence:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
3. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector, then lower vehicle.
4. Remove battery (auxiliary) ground cable, then oil dipstick tube and air cleaner.
5. Disconnect wire connectors, throttle linkage and fuel lines from TBI unit. Refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE/RELIEVING FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE for fuel pressure bleed procedure.
6. Disconnect heater hose from intake manifold, then all wiring connections from intake manifold and cylinder head.
7. Remove all vacuum lines that will interfere with manifold or cylinder head removal.
8. Remove engine torque strut rod bolts from upper support, then serpentine drive belt.
9. Remove alternator brackets and position alternator aside.
10. On vehicles equipped w/top mounted A/C compressor, remove compressor brackets and position compressor aside.
11. On vehicles equipped w/top mounted power steering pump, remove pump upper bracket.
12. On all models, remove radiator hoses, then rocker arm and push rod covers.
13. Remove rocker arms, push rods, then cylinder head attaching bolts.
14. Lift cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds as an assembly from cylinder block.
15. Reverse procedure to install. Coat heads and threads of cylinder bolts with a suitable sealing compound, then install bolts finger tight.
16. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 4 as follows:
a. Torque all bolts to 18 ft. lbs.
b. Torque all bolts except No. 9 to 26 ft. lbs. Torque No. 9 bolt to 18 ft. lbs.
c. Repeat sequence again, turning all bolts an additional 90 degrees or (1/4 turn).
17. Tighten intake manifold bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 2, if necessary.
18. Tighten exhaust manifold bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 3, if necessary.
