Removal and Replacement






1. Disconnect battery ground cable from transaxle.

2. Install engine support tool No. J 28467-A or equivalent.

3. Remove air cleaner assembly and TV cable routing clips and straps.

4. Remove bolt securing TV cable to transaxle, then remove shift cable.

5. Remove strut bracket bolts from transaxle, then disconnect electrical connector from neutral switch.

6. Remove [1][2]torque converter clutch and speedometer speed sensor.

7. Disconnect and plug oil cooler lines from transaxle bracket Remove transaxle to engine bolts, leaving one bolt loosely installed, near starter motor.

8. Remove shift linkage bracket and bolts.

9. Disconnect oil cooler lines from transaxle.

10. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front and left frame sections as follows:

a Install engine support fixture tool No. J-28467 or equivalent and tighten fasteners when properly positioned.

b. Position support hook into lifting bracket and tighten coupling nut only enough to remove slack from hook Engine support fixture must be located in center of cowl for 4 cylinder engines and on strut towers for 6 cylinder engines. Support fixture is not designed to support entire weight of engine and transaxle. Improper use may result in vehicle damage and/or personal injury.

c. Remove intermediate shaft to steering gear stub shaft attaching bolt, then raise and support vehicle.

d. Support engine with suitable jack, then remove left front wheel/tire assembly.

e. Remove power steering line brackets and steering gear mounting bolts.

f. Disconnect drive line vibration absorber, it equipped.

g. Disconnect left lower ball joint at steering knuckle, then remove both front stabilizer bar reinforcements and bushings.

h. Using a 1/2 inch drill bit, drill through spot weld located between rear holes of left stabilizer bar mounting.

i. Disconnect engine and transaxle mounts from cradle, then remove side crossmember bolts.

j. Remove left side body mount bolts, then the left and front frame assembly.

11. Failure to disconnect intermediate shaft from rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to steering ear and/or intermediate shaft is damage may cause loss of steering control.

12. Install drive axle seal protector tool No. J 34754 or equivalent, on drive axle seal. Remove drive axle Rotate strut assembly until axle is clear.

13. Remove starter and converter shields.

14. Remove three flywheel to converter bolts.

15. Remove two extension bolts from engine to transaxle bracket

16. Remove rear transaxle mounting bracket assembly. It may be necessary to slightly raise transaxle

17. Position transaxle jack below transaxle case, then remove two braces on right end of transaxle bolts.

18. Remove remaining transaxle to engine bolt, located near starter.

19. Remove transaxle by sliding towards drivers side of vehicle, away from engine.

20. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Torque flywheel to converter bolts to 46 ft lbs.; steering gear to intermediate shaft to 40 ft lbs.;transaxle to engine bolts to 55 ft lbs.; auxiliary oil cooler to 12 inch lbs.; flywheel cover to 97 inch lbs.; shift cable bracket to 20 ft lbs.; starter motor mounting bolts to 32 ft lbs.; transaxle mounting bolts to 41 ft lbs.

b. Adjust shift linkage, TV cable and fluid level.

c. Check front wheel alignment.
