Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Relieve fuel pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
3. Scribe hood installation alignment marks, then remove hood.
4. Disconnect battery leads, then drain engine coolant.
5. On VIN L engines, remove strut tower cross brace.
6. On all models, disconnect windshield washer, radiator and heater supply hoses.
7. Disconnect starter electrical connector and wiring.
8. Disconnect main engine harness and battery harness electrical connectors at relay center.
9. Remove accessory drive belt.
10. Remove power steering pump and position aside.
11. Remove air intake duct and air cleaner assembly.
12. Remove throttle cable from linkage bracket, then other applicable cables.
13. Disconnect the following electrical connectors and position aside:
a. On VIN L engines, MAT sensor.
b. On all models, throttle position switch.
c. Idle air control valve.
d. Oxygen sensor.
14. Remove ignition coil ground strap attaching screws.
15. Disconnect fuel feed and return lines from fuel rail and pressure regulator.
16. Disconnect throttle body canister hoses.
17. Disconnect brake booster and heater control hoses from engine vacuum connection.
18. Raise and support vehicle.
19. Remove exhaust pipe from right manifold.
20. Disconnect cruise control servo vacuum hoses.
21. Install suitable engine lifting equipment, then raise engine slightly.
22. Remove A/C compressor and position aside.
23. Disconnect engine oil cooler lines, if equipped.
24. Remove front engine mount.
25. Remove right front engine to transaxle bracket.
26. Using suitable jack stands, support transaxle, then remove engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
27. Remove flywheel cover.
28. Scribe flywheel installation alignment mark, then remove torque converter to flywheel attaching bolts.
29. Separate engine from transaxle, then remove engine assembly.
30. Reverse procedure to install.
31. Rearm airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
