Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

Fuel Filter:

The fuel filter is located under the front of the vehicle alongside the right body rail.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, always follow the proper procedure for disconnecting and connecting fuel line quick-disconnect fittings. This will ensure good connections and prevent possible fuel leaks.
Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.

REMOVAL:

1. Relieve the fuel system pressure, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

WARNING: To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off of the hoist.

3. Flush the fuel line quick-connectors at the filter with water and using compressed air, blow the debris out of the connectors.
4. Disconnect the inlet filter first. Grasp the large collar of the connector, twist in either direction and pull the connector off of the filter.
5. Loosen the filter from the bracket.
6. Disconnect the outlet connector by using the same procedure as that used for the inlet connector, and remove the filter from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION:

1. With a clean shop cloth, wipe the male tube ends of the filter.
2. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube ends.
3. Before reconnecting the quick-connectors, ensure that the large collar of the connector has rotated back to its original position. Examine the connector inside diameter, the springs must be visible.
4. Place the filter loosely in position.
5. Push the outlet connector onto the filter male tube ends pressing firmly together until the springs snap into place.
6. Check that the connector is locked ON by trying to pull the connector away from the male tube end of the filter.
7. Install the inlet connector using the same procedure as that for the front connector. Check that the connector is locked ON.
8. Secure the filter to the vehicle.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. START the engine and check for fuel leaks.
