Subject: SQUEAK AND RATTLE DETECTION AND ELIMINATION


Models: 1988-91 FIREBIRD MODELS


^ RATTLE IN REAR HATCH AREA (REPOSITION STRIKER REARWARD)


Condition: Rattle in rear hatch area of vehicle


Cause: Rear seatback striker mispositioned (too far forward)

Correction: Reposition striker rearward

^ DOOR RATTLE (REMOVE LOCK KNOB-PLACE ADHESIVE-BACKED FELT ON TOP AND BOTTOM SIDES)

Condition: Door Rattle

Cause: Door lock rod/knob rattles in escutcheon


Correction: Remove lock knob and place adhesive-backed felt on top and bottom sides (horizontal surfaces) of lock knob. Also, place felt on the vertical surface of the lock knob channel in the escutcheon. Felt is to be obtained locally (Most sewing shops carry this material).

^ LEFT SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL RATTLE (REMOVE HEADLAMP SWITCH AND WRAP WIRES)


Condition: Left side instrument panel rattle


Cause: Headlamp switch wiring hits instrument panel carrier.


Correction: Remove switch as outlined in Service Manual and wrap wires in foam tape such as 3M 06370 or equivalent.

RIGHT REAR AXLE AREA:

^ REAR UNDERBODY BUZZ OR RATTLE ON VEHICLES WITH N10 DUAL CATALYTIC CONVERTERS (INSTALL RUBBER BUMPER)


Condition: Rear Underbody buzz or rattle on vehicles equipped with N10 exhaust (Dual Catalytic Converters)

Cause: Heat Shield hits floor pan.


Correction: Install rubber bumper P/N 10164154 at location shown in Figure 1.

^ FRONT UNDERBODY/UNDERHOOD RATTLE (METALLIC IN SOUND) (REPOSITION INSULATOR BETWEEN BARS AND SECURE)


Condition: Front underbody/underhood rattle (metallic in sound)


Cause: Rubber insulator between radiator cross bars is mispositioned.


Correction: Reposition insulator between bars and secure with nylon strap (chicken band). Obtain nylon strap locally.
