Subject: WATER LEAKS INTO REAR COMPARTMENT (REPLACE WEATHERSTRIP WITH NEW)

Models
Affected: 1988-91 FIREBIRD CONVERTIBLES (BEFORE VIN ML242485)

Condition: Water leaks into the rear compartment area.

Cause: Wrinkles in weatherstrip at forward corners of rear compartment opening span entire width of weatherstrip and allow water to enter vehicle.

Correction: Replace old weatherstrip with new weatherstrip, P/N 10202305.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

Note: New weatherstrip may exhibit slight wrinkles in forward corners of rear compartment after installation. These wrinkles should not span the entire width of the weatherstrip.

Procedure:

1. Remove old weatherstrip.

2. Clean pinch weld flange with adhesive cleaner, 3M 08984 or equivalent.

3. Separate old weatherstrip at seam and remove foam plug.

4. Cut the new weatherstrip to the proper length. Install the foam plug from the old weatherstrip in the ends of the new weatherstrip and glue the ends of the weatherstrip together using 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive # 8011 (or equivalent). Allow appropriate time for the adhesive to cure.

5. Apply a bead of weatherstrip sealer (3M # 0811 or equivalent) on the outside of the pinch-weld flange 2 mm (5/64 in.) below the upper edge.

6. Position the weatherstrip on the flange such that the ends of the weatherstrip are located at the center of the rear edge of the compartment.

7. Press the weatherstrip onto the flange starting at the center of the forward edge of the compartment and working around each side towards the rear edge.
