Installation

NOTES:
- The gasket surfaces on both head and cylinder case deck must be clean of any foreign matter and free of nicks or heavy scratches.
- Cylinder bolt threads in the case and threads on the cylinder head bolts must be clean.
- Dirt will affect bolt torque.

INSTALLATION
1. Place the gasket in position, over the dowel pins, with the note "This Side Up" showing.
2. Install cylinder head.
3. Coat the cylinder head bolt threads with sealer GM P/N 1052080 (or equivalent), install bolts, and torque bolts to 55 Nm (40 lb. ft.) + 90°, using J 36660. See Figure 2 for tightening sequence.
4. Install pushrods and loosely retain with rocker arms. Make sure lower ends of push rods are in lifter seats.
5. Raise vehicle.
6. Install exhaust manifold and torque bolts to 25-42 Nm (18-30 lb. ft.) Refer to Exhaust Manifold / Service and Repair. Service and Repair
7. Install engine oil filter.
8. Lower vehicle.
9. Adjust valve lash. Refer to Valve, Intake/Exhaust / Adjustments. Adjustments
10. Install ground cable to rear of cylinder head. Refer to Vehicle / Locations / Connectors / Pictorial Views for harness locations. Connector Locations
11. Install generator bracket and generator. Refer to Alternator / Service and Repair. Service and Repair
12. Install tensioner.
13. Install serpentine belt.
14. Install intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold / Service and Repair. Service and Repair
15. Install spark plugs and torque to 34 Nm (25 lb. ft.)
16. Adjust engine coolant as necessary. For additional procedures refer to Cooling System / Service and Repair / Draining and Refilling. Service and Repair
17. Install engine oil to proper level.
