Subject: MOISTURE IN FOG LAMPS (SERVICE PROCEDURE/APPLY SEALER/TAPE)

Models
Affected: 1991 PONTIAC FIREBIRD MODELS EQUIPPED W/FOG LAMPS

CONDITION: Moisture in fog lamps

CAUSE: Water may run down the back of the lamp housing and in to the lamp through the bulb socket opening. Also, some lamp housings may have a leak at the seal between the lens and the housing, also allowing water to enter the lamp.

CORRECTION: Perform the following procedure to prevent water from entering the lamp assembly.

1. Remove front park/turn lamp from vehicle to gain access to fog lamp.

2. Remove the outboard fog lamp retaining screw.

3. Remove fog lamp assembly from cavity by rotating the lamp assembly.

4. Disconnect bulb and ground wire from lamp assembly.

5. Apply A THIN LAYER of 3M Clear Auto Sealer (# 08551) or equivalent to the seam between the glass lens and the housing to insure that the lamp is sealed. Allow to dry.

6. Apply a 4 inch long piece of 1/2 inch wide, grey 3M SCOTCH-MOUNT Super Automotive Attachment Tape (# 06384) or equivalent to the top edge of the lamp (on top of the adhesive).

7. Install the bulb and ground wire to the lamp assembly and position the lamp assembly in the lamp cavity. Inspect the position of the tape to insure that it closes out the area between the lamp assembly and the edge of the lamp cavity.
8. Complete installation by reversing steps 1 and 2.

9. Repeat for other side.
