Removal and Replacement
TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Tools Required:
^ J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture.
^ J 35944 Cooler Flushing Tool.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Heater hoses at heater core.
4. Intake air duct.
5. Cable control cover.
6. Throttle and TV cable.
7. Shift cable and bracket.
8. Throttle cable from throttle body.
9. Vacuum lines.
10. Electrical connections.
11. Power steering pump and set aside. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
12. Fluid fill tube.
13. Install engine support fixture J 28467-A.
14. Top engine to transaxle bolts (4).
15. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
16. Both front tire and wheel assemblies.
17. Left inner splash shield from control arm assembly.
18. Both lower ball joints. Refer to Front suspension.
19. Stabilizer shaft links.
20. Front air deflector.
21. Left suspension support.
22. Install drive axle seal protectors.
23. Both drive axles.
24. Engine to transaxle brace.
25. Flywheel cover.
26. Flywheel to torque converter bolts.
27. Transaxle cooler pipes.
28. Ground wires from engine to transaxle bolt.
29. Cooler pipe brace.
30. Exhaust brace.
31. Bolts from engine and transaxle mount.
32. Transaxle mount to body bolts.
33. Support transaxle with a jack.
34. Remaining engine to transaxle bolts.
35. Transaxle assembly.
INSPECT
^ For inspection and overhaul procedures, refer to Transmission Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.
CLEAN
^ Transaxle cooler and lines should be flushed with J 35944 or equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement of the torque converter, pump or case.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Place a thin film of grease GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent on the torque converter pilot knob.
^ Make sure to properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.
2. Transaxle assembly into position with jack while installing right drive axle.
3. Lower engine to transaxle bolts in their proper location.
4. Transaxle mount to body bolts.
5. Engine and transaxle mount bolts.
6. Exhaust brace.
7. Cooler pipe brace.
8. Ground wires at engine to transaxle bolt.
9. Transaxle cooler pipes.
10. Apply adhesive/sealant compound GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent on flywheel to torque converter bolts and install bolts.
11. Flywheel cover.
12. Engine to transaxle brace.
13. Drive axle seal protector J 37292-A and drive axles, then remove seal protectors.
14. Left suspension support.
15. Front air deflector.
16. Stabilizer shaft links. Refer to Front Suspension.
17. Lower ball joints.
18. Left inner splash shield.
19. Both tire and wheel assemblies.
20. Lower vehicle.
21. Top engine to transaxle bolts in their proper location.
IMPORTANT
^ Install the bolts in their proper location as shown.
22. Remove engine support fixture J 28467-A.
23. Fluid fill tube.
24. Power steering pump assembly and adjust belt.
25. Electrical connections.
26. Vacuum lines.
27. Throttle cable to throttle body.
28. Shift cable and bracket.
29. Throttle cable and TV cable.
30. Cable control cover.
31. Intake air duct.
32. Heater core hoses.
33. Fill cooling system.
34. Negative battery cable.
35. Fill transaxle.
ADJUST
^ TV cable.
^ Shift linkage.
INSPECT
^ Fluid level.
^ For fluid leaks.
