Cleaning & Inspection


1. Clean components in a suitable carburetor cleaning solvent.
2. Check all component wear and damage.
3. Check regulator valve spring for loss of tension and distortion.
4. Using a feeler gauge measure oil pump gear lash. Gear lash should be .004-.008 inch.
5. Check clearance between idler gear and oil pump body. On 1989 models, clearance should be .004-.007 inch. On 1990-91 models, clearance should be .0043-.0074 inch.
6. On all models, check clearance between drive gear and oil pump housing. Clearance should be .014-.018 inch.
7. Using a straightedge and feeler gauge, check clearance between gears and pump cover. Clearance should be .001 to .004 inch.
8. Measure oil pump housing gear pocket depth and diameter. Gear pocket depth should be .395-.397 inch. On 1989 models, gear pocket diameter should be 3.230-3.235 inch. On 1990-91 models, gear depth pocket should be 3.231-3.234 inch.
9. Measure drive and idler gear length and diameter. Drive and idler gear length should be .393-.394 inch. On 1989 models, drive gear diameter should be 2.317-2.319 inches. On 1990-91 models, drive gear diameter should be 1.612-1.613 inches. On 1989 models, idler gear diameter should be 3.225-3.227 inches. On 1990-91 models, idler gear diameter should be 3.2248-3.2269 inches.
10. On all models, replace any components that are found to be unsatisfactory.
