Shoulder Belt - Chatter, Bind, Complete/Repeat Traverse
FILE IN SECTION: 8 - Chassis/Body ElectricalBULLETIN NO.: 58-81-01A
DATE: March, 1995
SUBJECT:
Chattering, Binding or Incomplete/Repeat Traverse of Shoulder Belt on Passive Restraint (Service Procedure, Reference Campaign Bulletin 93-C-57)
MODELS:
1990-93 Pontiac LeMans
This bulletin is being revised to correct the artwork. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 58-81-01 (Section 8 - Chassis/Body Electrical).
CONDITION
1. Rapid chattering of the shoulder belt carrier.
2. Belt carrier does not reach A-Pillar or B-Pillar or stalls while moving.
3. Complete or repeat traverse of shoulder belt guide track unit from A-Pillar to B-Pillar but does not lock at B-Pillar.
4. Belt motor runs continuously but carrier does not move or carrier moves in short, jerky steps.
Important:
The carrier is driven by a retractable cable on a reel that is enclosed in the motor assembly. As the carrier is moved from the A-Pillar to the B-Pillar, the cable retracts and extends.
CAUSE
1. Insufficient lubrication of the shoulder belt track.
2. Insufficient lubrication of the shoulder belt track or insufficient voltage at shoulder belt motor or unwanted physical resistance of belt travel. (See Important)
3. Missing signal at passive restraint control module from A-Pillar or B-Pillar switch or passive restraint control module failure (See Important)
4. Possible damaged or broken drive cable.
Important:
The motorized shoulder belt has a feature which will stop the belt motion if anything obstructs the track or causes high physical resistance to the carrier's travel. This feature will also attempt to cycle the shoulder belt a second time and then shut down until the ignition key is cycled. See page 23 of the 1993 LeMans Owner's Manual for documentation.
CORRECTION
1. Lube track with guide unit per instructions (Use GMSPO # 12346288 Lube) and function several times. If guide unit still does not reach or lock in place at B-Pillar, perform test in Charts A and B.
2. Lube track with guide unit per instructions (Use GMSPO # 12346288 Lube) and function several times. If guide unit still does not reach or lock in place at B-Pillar, perform test in Charts A and B.
3. Perform Chart C.
4. Perform belt functional test D. During belt travel, grip belt firmly to stop belt travel for at least two (2) seconds. If belt does not return to A-Pillar and recycle or if clicking sound is heard in B-Pillar, replace track and motor assembly for broken or damaged cable.
LUBE INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Ignition switch OFF/KEY out
2. Disengage belt from carrier
3. Attach short curved plastic extension tube on the grease applicator.
NOTE:
THE RECOMMENDED GREASE (GMSPO # 12346228) IS REQUIRED DUE TO IT'S LUBRICATION PROPERTIES.
4. Apply a small portion of guide track grease at the 12 points shown in Figure 1 over the length of the carrier slot on the driver's side track rail. Refer to Figure. 2 for a cross-sectional view of the correct lubrication points.
5. Apply a small portion of grease at the 6 points on the secondary contact surface of the track rail as shown in Figure. 1. Refer to Figure. 2 for a cross-sectional view of correct lubrication points.
6. Connect belt to carrier and cycle several times to ensure proper function.
7. Repeat procedure for passenger side shoulder belt guide track rail.
Note:
TO ASSURE PROPER FUNCTION OF THE AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT SYSTEM, PERFORM CHART D AFTER ALL REPAIRED ARE COMPLETED
NOTE:
TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO PASSIVE RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE BEFORE DISCONNECTING OR RECONNECTING PASSIVE RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE.
