Subject: MISSING TIMING POINTER ON THE CAM BELT COVER (REPAIR PROCEDURE)
Models
Affected: 1991 PONTIAC LEMANS W/1.6L
Condition:
All 1991 LeMans built prior to VIN number MB310984 were built without a timing pointer in the cam belt cover (refer to the 1991 LeMans Service Manual, page 6A1-12 Figure 13, item number 5). If a timing light is being used, this pointer is required to set the ignition timing correctly. If available, a magnetic timing probe may be used instead of a timing light since a magnetic probe locator bushing is provided in the engine block.
If a timing light is to be used, a pointer must be obtained and installed in the specified hole in the cam belt cover. This pointer is available upon request, without charge, from the Pontiac Technical Assistance Center (TAC) by calling 1-800-742-4636.
Repair Procedure:
To provide access to the timing pointer location hole in the cam belt cover, the right hand lower engine compartment plastic splash shield must be removed. With the splash shield removed, the timing pointer hole in the cam belt cover is visible through the right hand front wheelhouse opening. Looking directly at the crankshaft pulley, the hole will be visible at approximately the "two o'clock" position. If the hole in the cam belt cover is dirty, it will be necessary to first clean the hole before installing the timing pointer. Prior to positioning the timing pointer into the hole in the cam belt cover, a small amount of Locktite # 290 Super Bond, or equivalent should be put on the pointer to positively retain it in the cam belt cover hole. The pointer must be fully seated into the hole to assure proper location of the pointer.
