Subject: OIL CANNING NOISE FROM SPARE TIRE AREA (DIMPLE SHEET METAL)
Models
Affected: 1992 BONNEVILLE MODELS
FIGURE 1:
CONDITION:
Some of the 1992 Bonneville models may exhibit an oil canning noise from the spare tire area in the rear compartment. This condition can be verified by pushing up on the trunk floor through an access hole in the undercarriage (see illustration).
CORRECTION:
FIGURE 2:
To correct this condition, the spare tire well must be reworked in the area shown in the illustration. The rework for this noise is to dimple the sheet metal in the area shown with a hammer. The dimpling is to be done from inside the trunk. The front to rear location of the dimple must be even with the centerline of the forward drain. The cross car location is about 3/4 of the way across the tire well starting at the centerline of the car. The dimpling shrinks and tightens the metal to correct the oil canning noise.
