Steering Column - Removal and Installation

Disarm airbag before removing steering columns. Refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG DEACTIVATION for disarming procedures.
REMOVAL
Before removing the steering column, Fig. 15, the wheels of the car must be straight and the column in the Lock position. Care must be taken when handling column with a live inflator module. Never point bag deploy surface toward you, and never stand column on steering wheel. Accidental deployment in these positions may cause injury. Always face bag deploy surface toward open space to allow for unrestricted expansion.
1. Remove the inflator module as follows:
a. Remove the Torx screws from the back of the steering wheel, then remove the inflator module from steering wheel.
b. Disconnect the coil assembly connector from inflator module.
2. Disconnect park lock cable from the ignition switch inhibitor.

3. Remove bolt and nut from upper intermediate shaft clamp, Fig. 12.
4. Remove knee bolster and bracket and screws attaching toe pan cover to the cowl.
5. Disconnect electrical connectors and remove capsule nuts attaching column support bracket to the instrument panel.
6. Remove steering column from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION
1. Install steering column into the vehicle, Fig. 16 and connect the park lock cable to the ignition switch inhibitor.
2. Install the capsule nuts attaching the column support bracket to the instrument panel.
3. Install the bolt and nut to the clamp attaching the intermediate shaft to the steering column and torque to 44 lb ft
4. Install screws attaching toe pan cover to the cowl and connect electrical connectors.
5. Install knee bolster and bracket and sound insulator panel.
6. Connect coil assembly to the inflator module, then install inflator module to the steering wheel and torque screws to 25 lb in
7. Install left side sound insulator, then connect the battery ground cable.
8. Rearm airbag as previously outlined in MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE/AIRBAG ACTIVATION.
