Assemble
If replacing 1st/2nd or 3rd/4th synchronizer blocker rings, soak new blocker ring assemblies for 10 minutes in Dexron II E, or equivalent, before assembly on output shaft. Coat output shaft and gear bores with transmission fluid.
1. Install anti-rattle (detent) spring and ball in hub.
2. Install 1st/2nd synchronizer sleeve on output shaft hub, aligning marks made at disassembly. Use care in synchronizer spring replacement. If synchronizer is assembled with improper spring replacement, hard shifting will result.
3. Install 1st/2nd synchronizer keys and springs. Engage tang end of each spring in same synchronizer key, but position open end of springs opposite each other.
4. Install three-piece 1st gear blocker ring assembly.
5. Install locating pin into output shaft.
6. Install sleeve and bearing onto output shaft, aligning notch in sleeve with locating pin.
7. Install 1st gear, aligning slots in 1st gear with tabs on blocker rings assembly.
8. Install rear output shaft bearing with taper facing rear of shaft. Lubricate 5th gear splines with petroleum jelly. Carefully align output shaft and gear splines. If splines are improperly aligned, damage could occur when gear is pressed onto output shaft.
9. Install 5th gear onto output shaft using front and rear bearing installer tool No. J 25234 or equivalent and a press.
10. Install 5th gear snap ring.
11. Install three-piece second gear blocker ring assembly and thrust washer.
12. Install spiral snap ring using spiral snap ring installer tool No. 37360 or equivalent.
13. Install 2nd gear spacer, needle bearing and gear, aligning slots in 2nd gear with tabs on blocker ring assembly.
14. Install 2nd gear thrust washer and snap ring.
15. Install 3rd gear spacer and needle bearing assembly. Ensure bearing spacer is not trapped between gear face and snap ring. Spacer runs inside gear bore.
16. Install 3rd/4th synchronizer, 3rd blocker ring, sleeve, hub and 3rd gear as an assembly using synchronizer and gear installer tool No. J 37372 or equivalent, and a press.
17. Install thrust bearing and race to front end of output shaft. Before pressing components together, ensure synchronizer hub faces short end of output shaft. Hold 3rd gear against synchronizer to maintain blocker ring alignment with keys.
