On tilt column, the column must first be lowered from panel.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove steering wheel using puller. Do not hammer on end of shaft as hammering could collapse shaft or loosen plastic injections which maintain column rigidity.
2. Remove cover by prying out with a screwdriver at slots provided in cover for this purpose.
3. Depress lock plate and pry round wire lock ring out of shaft groove, Fig. 13. Remove lock plate.
4. Slide upper bearing preload spring and turn signal cancelling cam off shaft.
5. Remove actuator arm screw and actuator arm, then turn signal lever.
6. Push hazard warning switch in and unscrew knob.
7. Pull turn signal wiring connector out of bracket on jacket and disconnect.
8. Remove three turn signal switch screws.
9. Remove shift indicator cable, if equipped.
10. Lower steering column from instrument panel and remove wire protector, then pull switch straight up with wire protector and remove housing. Place tape around upper part of connector and wires to prevent snagging when switch is being removed, Fig. 14.

MODELS WITH SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT SYSTEM
1. To avoid personal injury when servicing models equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (Airbag) System, temporarily disarm system. Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair.
2. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING SUSPENSION CHASSIS AND BODY COMPONENTS/STEERING/COMPONENT REPLACEMENT REPAIR PROCEDURES/HORN SOUNDER AND STEERING.
3. Place ignition switch in Lock position to retain coil assembly in the centered position.
4. Disconnect battery ground cable.
5. Remove coil assembly retaining ring, Fig. 15.
6. Lift coil assembly from from steering shaft and allow to hang from wire, then remove wave washer.
7. Using a suitable tool, compress lock plate and remove snap ring (C-ring on tilt models), Fig. 13.
8. Remove lock plate, turn signal canceling cam and upper bearing spring, inner race seat and inner race.
9. Place turn signal lever in right hand turn position, then remove multi-function lever and hazard warning flasher knob.
10. Remove turn signal switch lever attaching screw, then remove lever.
11. Remove turn signal switch attaching screws.
12. Disconnect turn signal switch electrical connector at lower portion of steering column.
13. Remove turn signal switch wiring protector cover from steering column, Fig. 16.
14. Carefully pull turn signal switch wiring up and out of steering column, Fig. 16.
15. Reverse procedure to install. If coil assembly has become uncentered, refer to Fig. 17 for centering procedure.
16. After completing service procedure activate Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (Airbag) System. Refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
