Reverse Input Clutch Assembly
1. Remove retaining ring from reverse input housing, then the backing plate.
2. Remove clutch plates and waved steel plate.
3. Install clutch spring compressor tool No. J-33327 and clutch spring compressor adapter tool No. J-25018, or equivalents, then compress spring assembly.
4. Remove spring assembly retainer ring and spring assembly.
5. Remove reverse input clutch piston, then the inner and outer lip seals from piston.
6. Inspect backing plate for damage, distortion, burrs and surface finish damage.
7. Inspect clutch plates for tang damage, delamination, wear and heat damage.
8. Inspect spring assembly for distortion or damage.
9. Inspect piston for loose retaining rings and dishing or deforming.
10. Inspect housing and drum assembly for damaged or worn bushings, leaking welds, damaged hub and outer housing surfaces and free moving retainer and ball assembly.
11. Install inner and outer seals on the piston. Seal lips should face away from hub.
12. Install piston on housing and drum assembly, using an 8 mm feeler gauge to position the lip seals.
13. Install spring assembly. Ensure large opening in assembly faces piston.
14. Install clutch spring compressor tool No. J-23327 and adapter No. J-25018 or equivalents. Then compress spring assembly and install retainer ring.
15. Install waved steel clutch plate.
16. Install clutch plates. Refer to the image for correct number plates. Start with composition plate and alternate with steel.
17. Install backing plate with 9hamfered side up, then the retaining ring.
18. To select the reverse input clutch backing plate, proceed as follows:
a. With the reverse input clutch fully assembled, apply an evenly distributed load to the clutch pack in the direction and diameter indicated.
b. A medium pressure of approximately 20 ft. lbs., on the backing plate applied by fingers on five evenly distributed points will obtain the backing plate travel for measurement. Do not apply excessive pressure, or distortion of the "belleville" plate will result.
c. Using a feeler gauge, measure between snap ring and backing plate. Backing plate travel should be 0.040 - 0.075 inch.
d. Select the proper backing plate to obtain the specified travel.
