Subject: FRONT COIL SPRING "CLATTER OR RATTLE" (INSTALL COIL SLEEVE)
Models
Affected: 1992 GRAND AM MODELS
Condition: Some front suspension coil springs may seem to rattle or clatter when the vehicle is in motion.
Cause: Contact between the first and second coils at the upper (large) end of the coil spring. This contact occurs between 1/4 and 1/2 of a turn from the end of the coil spring on the coil directly below it.
Correction: Install coil sleeve, P/N 22077538 at 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 wraps (or coil turns) from the large end of spring.
Parts are expected to be available on February 10, 1992. In case of limited inventory, parts will be placed on 400 Control to waive VIP surcharges. Only verifiable emergency VIP orders will be accepted. SPO will make every effort to obtain parts. However, the part will be shipped premium transportation at dealer's expense and all other order types will be placed on backorder until the 400 control is removed.
Procedure:
1. Drive vehicle and verify noise.
2. Determine if spring already has a coil sleeve.
3. If no coil sleeve is present:
a. Inspect upper coil spring for witness marks or signs of interference.
b. If signs of contact are found, apply adhesive (3M # 51135-08662 or equivalent) to inside of sleeve, press sleeve onto spring and slide up until sleeve hits pinchpoint between upper two coils. See Figure.
c. Drive vehicle to verify that noise is eliminated.
d. If noise still exists, some other condition is present.
4. If coil sleeve already is present:
a. Verify location of coil sleeve.
b. If sleeve is in wrong location follow step 3.
c. If sleeve is in correct location some other condition is present.
