1992 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA
1992 PONTIAC GRAND AM

This bulletin is being revised to provide updated parts information and change the service procedure. Previous divisional publication numbers were:

GM of Canada 92-1-121

Oldsmobile 92-T-116

Pontiac 92-1-9

Important:
Prior to performing any service procedure related to air conditioning low performance conditions, this procedure MUST be completed first.

CONDITION:

Some owners may comment on insufficient air conditioning cooling, when pressures are within specifications (refer to "V-5 TXV Diagnostic Test", SECTION 1B in applicable Service Manual).

CAUSE:

Heater - A/C temperature door may not be closing completely, allowing "warmed" air to blend with "cooled" A/C discharge air.

CORRECTION:

For repair, perform the following:

1. Remove right side lower I/P insulator to gain access to lower temperature control cable.

2. Remove temperature control cable from temperature door arm (use 7 mm socket to push the retaining "fingers" together to allow easier removal) and unscrew end from cable.

3. Remove temperature door arm retainer (gold colored) from case post. Remove arm and discard both arm and retainer.

4. Install new temperature door arm from GM kit, P/N 52466284, positioning as shown in illustration, using new retainer (included in kit). To aid in seating retainer, use a short 19 mm - 3/8" socket to push retainer on.

5. Install new white colored temperature control cable end to cable, leaving 3 threads of the cable showing outside the cable end (towards "eyelet").

6. Install temperature control cable to arm using new push-on retainer. Seat retainer fully onto arm "pin".

7. Firmly rotate control head temperature knob toward "full hot" until clicks are heard and knob cannot be rotated further.

8. Reinstall insulator panel.

Evaluate system performance after repair to verify that the condition has been corrected. If performance is still not adequate, follow "V-5 TXV Diagnostic Procedure" as given in SECTION 1B of the applicable Service Manual.

Parts are expected to be available on October 18, 1993.
