Subject:
REAR DOOR GLASS CHATTER (ATTACH LOW FRICTION TAPE ON DOOR GLASS
Models Affected:
1992 GRAND AM MODELS
Condition:
Some owners of 1992 Grand Am sedans may comment on rear door glass chatter upon operation of rear electric windows.
Cause:
Excessive friction between glass and upper and lower run channels resulting in an erratic glass movement known as glass chatter.
Correction:
Attach six pieces of low friction segmented tape, Kit P/N 22586239, on rear door glass edges per following procedure:
- Remove rear door glass per 1992 "N" Service Manual procedure.
- Clean glass edges with 3M 08984 all purpose cleaner, or equivalent.
- Attach low friction segmented insulator tape as follows:
^ Brown strip to be used on the front edge of glass P/N 22585829 part of kit P/N 22586239.
^ White strip with hole punched in backing paper used on rear edge of glass P/N 22585830. The side of tape with hole punched in the backing paper is the narrow side. That side should be applied to the outside surface of glass.
^ Remove protective backing from tape.
^ Place the first strip of tape beginning approximately 5.0 mm from the tangent at the top of glass (Figure 1).
^ Allow 5.0 mm clearance between tape strips.
^ Repeat procedure on opposite side of glass.
