Refrigerant Drum Method
Charging The A/C System With Refrigerant Drum:
REFRIGERANT DRUM METHOD
Tool Required:
J-23575-01 Manifold Gage Set
Place the refrigerant drum on a scale and record the total drum weight before charging. Watch the scale during charging to determine the amount of refrigerant used.
1. Connect manifold gage Set as follows:
a. Low-pressure gage hose (blue) to accumulator fitting.
b. Gage set center hose (yellow) to refrigerant source.
c. High-pressure gage hose (red) to vacuum pump.
2. To begin evacuation, hookup the manifold gage set and vacuum pump as shown, slowly open the high-side and low-side gage valves and start the vacuum pump.
Pump the system until the low-side gage reaches 94.5 - 97.9 kPa (28" - 29") vacuum.
If the prescribed vacuum can't be reached, close the vacuum control valve and turn off the pump. Look for a leak at the connections or the pump.
3. When the gage reaches the prescribed vacuum, the system is fully evacuated. Close the high-side gage set valve and turn off the vacuum pump.
4. Watch the low-side gage to be sure vacuum holds for 5 minutes. If vacuum holds, disconnect the vacuum hose at the gage set. Then, proceed with charging the system.
5. If vacuum does not hold for 5 minutes, charge the system with 0.23 kg (1/2 lb.) of refrigerant and check for leaks. Discharge the system again and repair any leaks.
6. Repeat the evacuation procedure.
