Refer to Fig. 51 when servicing these steering columns.

STEERING COLUMN COVERS

1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Remove cover screws, then the upper steering column cover.
3. Remove lower steering column cover screws, then the lower steering column cover.
4. Reverse procedure to install. Torque mounting screws to 49 lb in

TURN SIGNAL SWITCH

1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Remove turn signal switch mounting screws, then the turn signal switch.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors from switch.
4. Reverse procedure to install. Torque mounting screws to 49 lb in

WASH/WIPE SWITCH

1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Remove wash/wipe switch mounting screws, then the wash/wipe switch.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors from switch.
4. Reverse procedure to install. Torque mounting screws to 49 lb in

IGNITION SWITCH

Removal

1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Place shifter lever in Park position, then the ignition key in OFF-LOCK position and remove key.
3. Remove ignition switch mounting screws, then the ignition switch.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors from switch.

Installation

1. Connect electrical connectors to switch.
2. Ensure shifter lever in Park position and ignition key is in OFF-LOCK position with key removed.
3. Ensure tab on lock cylinder housing assembly aligns with slotted opening on ignition switch, then install ignition switch assembly to lock cylinder housing assembly with two screws. Torque mounting screws to 49 lb in
4. Install steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.

INTERLOCK SOLENOID ASSEMBLY

Column Shift
1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Place shifter lever in Park position, then the ignition key in OFF-LOCK position and remove key.
3. Disconnect wire connector from interlock solenoid assembly.
4. Remove interlock solenoid mounting screws, then the interlock solenoid assembly.
5. Reverse procedure to install. Torque mounting screws to 21 lb in

LOCK CYLINDER HOUSING

1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Remove steering column from vehicle as described under REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
3. Place key in RUN position and shift lever in PARK.
4. Drill off heads of two shear bolts using a 1/4 inch drill bit.
5. Remove lock cylinder housing assembly, then the threaded ends of shear bolts from lock cylinder housing assembly.
6. Reverse procedure to install. Install lock cylinder housing with two shear bolts and tighten bolts until heads break off, approximately 97 lb in

PARK LOCK CABLE

Removal

1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Place key in RUN position, then disconnect park lock cable from lock cylinder housing assembly.
3. On models with column shift, disconnect park lock cable from shift gate assembly.

Installation

1. Place key in RUN position and shift lever in PARK position.
2. Snap connector body of cable assembly to lock cylinder, ensuring locking tab is fully engaged into lock cylinder housing.
3. On models with column shift, place key in OFF-LOCK position and pull key half way out of lock cylinder housing.
4. Route cable end fitting through park lock latch, then depress adjuster button and snap cable adjuster assembly to shift gate assembly.
5. Snap cable into cable retainer, then depress adjuster button and pull cable sheathing towards lock cylinder to remove lash from system.
6. Release sheathing, then release button.

SHIFT LEVER GATE & CLEVIS ASSEMBLY

Column Shift
1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Remove shift lever, then the shift cable from shift cable ball stud.
3. Remove shoulder tapping screw, button head screw, shift pivot bushing and stud and clevis assembly.
4. Remove clevis spacer, shift lever spring, spring retainer, two flat head screws and shift lever gate assembly.
5. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque flat head screws to 14 ft. lbs, button head screw to 15 ft. lbs and shoulder tapping screw to 119 lb in
b. Lubricate clevis spacer.


STEERING COLUMN JACKET BUSHING ASSEMBLY, ORIENTATION PLATE CAM, TURN SIGNAL CANCEL CAM ASSEMBLY, UPPER BEARING SPRING, BEARING ASSEMBLY, STEERING COLUMN SHAFT ASSEMBLY, STEERING COLUMN HOUSING ASSEMBLY & STEERING COLUMN JACKET ASSEMBLY

Disassembly

1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Remove turn signal switch mounting screws and turn signal switch, letting switch hang freely.
3. Remove wash/wipe switch mounting screws and wash/wipe switch, letting switch hang freely.
4. Remove retaining ring using lock plate adapter J 23653-91 and lock plate compressor J 23653-C or their equivalents to compress orientation plate cam and upper bearing spring. Discard retaining ring.
5. Remove orientation plate cam, turn signal cancel cam assembly, upper bearing spring, inner race seat, and inner race.
6. Pull tilt lever bracket on column housing assembly and tilt column all the way up.
7. Remove steering column from vehicle as described under REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
8. Inspect steering column for damage.
9. Remove steering column jacket bushing from lower end of jacket assembly, then insert a Phillips head screwdriver into square opening in spring retainer, push down and turn counterclockwise to release retainer and wheel tilt spring.
10. Remove spring retainer and tilt spring, then the two pivot pins using pivot pin remover J 21854-01 or equivalent.
11. Place lock cylinder in RUN position, then pull tilt lever to release column housing and remove column housing from housing support.
12. Remove wire support screw and wire support, then the steering shaft assembly from housing support.
13. Remove tilt bumpers from housing support with pliers, then the pan head screws and housing support from jacket assembly.

14. If necessary, service steering shaft assembly as follows:
a. Before separating upper and lower shafts, note relationship of upper shaft with alignment mark in threaded end at 12 o'clock position and lower shaft pinch bolt groove at 9 o'clock position. Refer to this alignment for proper reassembly.
b. Position upper shaft 90° to lower shaft and separate, Fig. 53.
c. Rotate centering sphere 90° and remove from upper shaft.
d. Separate sphere halves and joint preload spring.

Assembly

Ensure all fasteners are securely seated before applying torque. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunctioning of steering column.
1. If necessary, assemble steering shaft as follows:
a. Lubricate centering sphere halves and joint preload spring with lithium grease, then assemble spring between sphere halves with ends of spring in notches.
b. Lubricate sphere end of upper shaft with lithium grease, then assemble sphere into upper shaft and rotate sphere 90°.
c. Lubricate sphere end of lower shaft with lithium grease.
d. Place alignment notch on threaded end of upper shaft at 12 o'clock, Fig. 54. Pinch bolt groove near end of lower shaft must be at 9 o'clock position.
e. Position upper shaft 90° to lower shaft, then engage and straighten, Fig. 53.
2. Assemble housing support to jacket assembly with support screws. Torque screws to 12 lb ft
3. Install tilt bumpers to housing support and snap into place.
4. Install steering shaft assembly into support housing.
5. Lubricate both bearings in column housing with lithium grease, then assemble column housing onto shaft assembly and column support.
6. Lubricate pivot pins with lithium grease, then install pivot pins until bottomed in housing. Stake pivot pins to housing in three equally spaced locations. If there is no surface suitable for restaking, housing must be replaced.
7. Pull tilt lever bracket on column housing assembly and tilt column all the way up.
8. Lubricate tilt spring with lithium grease, then install tilt spring with spring retainer. Ensure spring engages locating tab on support housing. Insert Phillips head screwdriver into square opening in spring retainer, push down and turn clockwise to lock in place.
9. Install wire support with wire support screw. Torque screw to 53 lb in
10. Place key in OFF-LOCK position, remove key, rotate shaft until lock bolt engages and locks shaft in position.
11. Install inner race and inner race seat.
12. Install upper bearing spring and turn signal cancel cam assembly.
13. Install orientation plate cam, then a new retaining ring using lock plate adapter and lock plate compressor to compress orientation plate cam and upper bearing spring. Ensure retaining ring is firmly seated in groove.
14. Install turn signal switch, wash/wipe switch and park lock cable as previously described.
15. Install steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
