Ignition Lock Cylinder

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL then remove upper steering column covers.
3. Remove windshield wiper switch as described under BODY ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND ENTERTAINMENT/AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT/WINDSHIELD WIPER AND WASHER SYSTEMS/COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR PROCEDURE/WINDSHIELD WASHER/WIPER SWITCH.
4. Using tool No. J23653 or equivalent, compress plate cam, then remove snap ring, plate cam and upper bearing spring, Fig. 15.
5. Remove thrust washer, then remove upper bearing.
6. Disconnect steering column shaft from coupling and remove column to mounting bracket bolts.
7. Remove steering column from vehicle.
8. With ignition lock in Run position, use a 1/4 inch drill bit to remove heads of shear bolts, Fig. 16.
9. Remove lock cylinder housing.
10. Using locking type pliers , remove threaded portion of shear bolts from lock cylinder housing.
11. Reverse procedure to install. Clean metal particles from steering column. Ignition lock should be Run position during installation. When installing lock cylinder, heads of bolts should shear at approximately 97 lb in of torque.
