Test L: Compass Calibration and Alignment

TO ALIGN VEHICLE (AND COMPASS) TO NORTH

1. Locate True North from a map or location along a major N-S highway.
2. Point the front of the vehicle at North and push the "NORTH" button.

The words "N SET' will be displayed briefly and the compass will align itself to a North heading. After travelling more than 800 km (500 mi) in an East-West direction, reset the compass to North occasionally to compensate for magnetic declination. (Compass accuracy is affected by the fact that True North and Magnetic North are not in the same place). Resetting is performed by simply pointing the vehicle at True North again and pressing the "NORTH" button. Note that it is not necessary to reorient the compass to the vehicle each time you set "NORTH," only when the words "CALIBRATE COMPASS" scroll across the display.

CALIBRATION

Two separate operations are needed to calibrate the compass. First, the compass must be oriented to the vehicle. Second, the vehicle must be aligned to North. To orient the compass to the vehicle:

1. Select an open area such as a large parking lot, away from other vehicles and large metal structures or power lines.
2. Take an observer with you to help avoid accidents or injury to others.
3. With the engine running and all accessories off, push the "CAL" button. The word "CALIB" should be displayed.
4. Drive the vehicle slowly in a circle.
5. When the compass has oriented itself to the vehicle, the word "CALSET" will be displayed.

After performing the Calibration and Alignment procedures, and the Compass Display still does not work correctly, check for a poor connection. If OK, replace the Driver Information Center/ Electronic Compass Display.
