Cylinder Head Removal and Installation

Cylinder Head & Camshaft Carrier Bolt Tightening Sequence:






Cylinder head bolts should only be loosened when engine is cold. Do not reuse cylinder head bolts.
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE/RELIEVING FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE
2. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain coolant.
3. Remove air filter housing assembly.
4. On turbocharged models, remove turbo induction tube.
4. On all models, remove coolant reservoir tank.
5. Remove fuel vapor pipe assembly. Place shop towel over fuel line and fitting when disconnecting.
6. Remove serpentine belt and front timing cover upper attaching bolts.
7. Loosen serpentine belt tensioner and position aside.
8. Raise and support vehicle, then remove righthand inner splash shield and lower righthand splash shield.
9. Remove air conditioning belt.
10. Remove crankshaft pulley as outlined under CRANKSHAFT PULLEY.
11. Remove flywheel inspection cover.
12. Remove front timing belt cover lower attaching bolts, then remove cover, then align timing marks.
13. Loosen water pump attaching bolts and release timing belt tension using tool No. J-33039-A or equivalent, then remove timing belt.
14. On turbocharged models, remove exhaust pipe from turbo assembly, then disconnect oil and coolant lines to turbo assembly, then remove lower turbo assembly brace.
15. On non-turbocharged models, remove exhaust pipe to manifold.
16. On all models, lower vehicle and remove fuel vapor pipe. Place shop towel over fuel line and fitting when disconnecting.
17. Remove rear timing cover attaching bolts, then remove rear timing cover.
18. Remove PCV attaching hose.
19. Disconnect intake manifold and cylinder head electrical connectors.
20. Remove exhaust manifold attaching bolts.
21. On turbocharged models, remove exhaust manifold and turbo assembly.
22. On all models, remove power steering pump pressure and return lines.
23. Remove alternator and alternator bracket with power steering pump.
24. Disconnect front and rear engine lift brackets, then remove coil assembly.
25. On turbocharged models, remove turbo boost solenoid.
26. On all models, remove breather tube bracket and breather tube.
27. Remove accelerator linkage and bracket, then remove attaching fuel lines. Place shop towel over fuel line and fitting when disconnecting.
28. Remove cylinder head and intake manifold electrical connectors and attaching hoses and coolant lines.
29. Remove cylinder head and camshaft carrier attaching bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 6.
30. Remove camshaft carrier, them remove rocker arms, lash compensators and thrust pieces.
31. Remove cylinder head and intake manifold.
32. Reverse procedure to install. Refer to Fig. 7, for cylinder head and camshaft carrier attaching bolt tightening sequence. Tighten attaching bolts to specifications.
