Vehicle - No Start, Battery Run Down or Blown Fuse

NO START, BATTERY RUN DOWN OR BLOWN FUSE
(CUT CENTER TRIM SCREW/REPAIR WIRE)
MODELS:
1986-94 CHEVROLET CAVALIER
1986-94 PONTIAC SUNBIRD (CONVERTIBLE ONLY)
CONDITION:
Some owners may comment on a no start, battery run down or blown fuse condition.
CAUSE:
Some convertible models were built with a lower reveal trim screw which is too long (Figure 1). In some instances when the screw was installed, the screw pierced the wire or wires leading to the rear deck lid compartment lamp causing the circuit to ground.
CORRECTION:
Remove or disconnect -
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
2. Remove rear compartment lamp bracket with deck lid 2/3 up.
3. Remove lower reveal trim screw (Figure 1).
4. Cut 5 mm (1/4") off end of screw.
5. Repair any damaged wiring. Refer to Section 8A of the Service Manual.
Install or Connect -
1. Install lower reveal screw.
2. Install rear compartment lamp (with deck lid 2/3 up).
3. Check wires to screw clearance.

Add: 0.2 hr. to remove bracket and cut screw
