10. Reinstall key in lock cylinder and turn to LOCK position.
11. Remove retaining screw, then the lock cylinder set.
Assembly
Ensure all fasteners are securely seated before applying torque. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunctioning of steering column.
1. Install lock cylinder set and retaining screw. Torque screw to 40 lb in
2. Remove key from lock cylinder set, then install buzzer switch assembly.
3. Re-install key in lock cylinder set, then turn key to LOCK position.
4. Install turn signal switch assembly and screws. Torque screws to 30 lb in
5. Install signal switch arm and screw. Torque screw to 20 lb in
6. Install hazard knob assembly and multi-function lever.
7. Install thrust washer, upper bearing spring and turn signal cancelling cam assembly. Lubricate cancelling cam with synthetic grease.
8. Install shaft lock and shaft lock retaining ring using plate compressor J 23653-C to depress shaft lock. Ring must be fully seated in groove.
9. Install shaft lock cover, then connect battery ground cable.
10. Install steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY, TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY, STEERING COLUMN HOUSING ASSEMBLY, SWITCH ACTUATOR PIVOT ASSEMBLY, SPRING & BOLT ASSEMBLY, BEARING ASSEMBLY, SWITCH ACTUATOR SECTOR & IGNITION SWITCH ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
Disassembly
1. Remove steering wheel as described under STEERING WHEEL.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove steering column from vehicle as described under REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
4. Inspect steering column for damage.
5. Perform all disassembly steps from ``Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam Assembly, Upper Bearing Spring, Thrust Washer, Buzzer Switch Assembly & Steering Column Lock Cylinder Set'' as previously described.
6. Remove steering shaft assembly, then the retaining ring from shaft.
7. Inspect column shaft assembly for damage.
8. Remove four support bolts, then the steering column support bracket assembly.
9. Remove wiring protector, turn signal switch assembly, washer head screw and hex nut.
10. Remove dimmer switch, dimmer switch rod and switch mounting stud.
11. Remove ignition switch, two cross recess screws and ignition switch inhibitor housing assembly.
12. Remove cover screws and lock housing cover assembly with floor shift lever bowl and shift bowl shroud. Pull housing cover from jacket and remove upper bearing retainer.
13. Remove three cross recess screws, floor shift lever bowl with shift bowl shroud, then the shroud from bowl.
14. If necessary, disassemble steering column housing as follows:
a. Remove switch actuator rack with spring and bolt assembly, then the spring and bolt assembly from switch actuator rack.
b. Remove switch actuator rod from rack, then the spring thrust washer from spring and bolt assembly.
c. Remove switch actuator sector, rack preload spring, switch actuator pivot pin and switch actuator pivot assembly.
d. Remove bearing retaining bushing using a punch, then the bearing assembly using a punch.
Assembly
Ensure all fasteners are securely seated before applying torque. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunctioning of steering column.
Use bearing retainer bushing to aid in seating bearing assembly into housing assembly. Tab on bushing must be fully seated into slot in housing assembly.
1. If necessary, assemble steering column housing as follows:
a. Install bearing assembly, bearing retaining bushing, switch actuator pivot assembly and switch actuator pivot pin. Torque pin to 27 lb in
b. Install rack preload spring and switch actuator sector.
c. Assemble spring thrust washer to bolt assembly, switch actuator rod to switch actuator rack, then the spring and bolt assembly to switch actuator rack.
d. Assemble spring and bolt assembly with switch actuator rack to housing assembly. First tooth of rack must interact with first and second tooth of sector. With rack fully inserted, block tooth of sector will rest in block tooth of rack.
2. Assemble retaining ring to shaft assembly, then the shaft assembly to jacket assembly. Lubricate with lithium grease.
3. Assemble shift bowl shroud to floor shift lever bowl, then the bowl with shroud to steering column housing assembly.
4. Install three cross recess screws, then torque to 17 lb in
5. Install turn signal switch connector through column housing assembly, then the upper bearing retainer.
6. Assemble lock housing cover assembly with bowl and shroud to jacket assembly.
7. Install cover screws and tighten in a clockwise order finger tight, then torque screws in same order to 47 lb in
8. Adjust ignition switch assembly by moving switch slider to extreme left position, then one detent to right, OFF-LOCK position. New ignition switch will be pinned in OFF-LOCK position, remove plastic pin after switch is installed on column.
