Differential

DISASSEMBLE
1. Remove side bearings using puller tool No. J-22888, puller leg kit J-22888-30 and pilot tool No. J-2241-11, or equivalents.

2. Remove ten bolts, ring gear and speedometer drive gear. Do not reuse ring gear bolts, or speedometer drive gear.

3. Drive out lockpin and remove cross pin, pinion gears and thrust washers. Pull side gears and thrust washers from differential.


ASSEMBLE
1. Install two side gears and thrust washers on case, then position two thrust washers and pinion gears opposite each other by turning side gear.

2. Insert cross pin, maintaining 0.0012-0.0031 inch tolerance, then install and stake lockpin.

3. Heat new speedometer drive gear and/or rotor to 200° F, then install on differential. Do not use hot water to heat speedometer drive gear or rotor.

4. Heat ring gear to 122-212°F, then apply oil on inside diameter of ring gear and position gear on differential case.

5. Apply small amount of oil on new ring gear bolt, then install bolts. Tighten bolts to 79 lbs. ft. in a diagonal sequence.

6. Apply engine oil to cross pin, differential gears, differential thrust portion, side gear shaft and spline, then install into differential case.

7. Slide bearing on differential case using bearing installer tool No. J-22919, or equivalent, and a press.
