Engine: Service and Repair


1. Relieve fuel system pressure as follows:
a. Remove fuel pump fuse from fuse panel.
b. Start engine. After engine stalls, crank for ten seconds to relieve residual pressure from fuel system.
c. Turn ignition off and install fuel pump fuse.
2. Disconnect battery cables and engine ground wire.
3. Disconnect lower radiator hose and drain cooling system into a suitable container.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly.
5. Disconnect upper radiator hose and heater hose from engine.
6. Disconnect cable from throttle body.
7. Label and disconnect the following vacuum hoses; brake servo, vacuum sensor, intake manifold to vapor canister and throttle valve body to vapor canister.
8. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle shift cable from throttle body.
9. On all models, disconnect fuel lines from throttle body. Place shop towel over fuel line and fitting when disconnecting.
10. Disconnect electrical connectors from the following components: oxygen sensor, oil pressure switch, intake manifold temperature sensor, speed sensor, injector nozzle, back-up lamp switch, neutral start switch, throttle valve, idle air control motor and distributor.
11. Disconnect instrument panel harness connector, ground wires from camshaft housing and intake manifold and wiring harness retaining strap.
12. Remove ignition coil plugs and cable.
13. Disconnect bulkhead wiring harness connector.
14. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect torque converter clutch electrical connector.
15. On all models, raise and support vehicle.
16. On 1990-92 models, remove splash shield.
17. On all models, remove exhaust pipe and catalytic converter.
18. Pull driveshaft out of transaxle, then remove closure plug from transaxle case.
19. Disconnect interference suppression cable from transaxle.
20. Remove clutch cover plate, then remove clutch housing to engine block lower attaching bolts.
21. Lower vehicle, then attach suitable lifting equipment to engine lift hooks.
22. Support transaxle with a suitable jack, then remove right front and left front engine mount attaching bolts and the mount, then remove rear engine mount attaching bolts..
23. Remove clutch housing to engine block upper attaching bolts.
24. Separate engine from clutch housing, then carefully lift engine from vehicle.
25. Reverse procedure to install.
