INFORMATION

Subject:
Replacement of Heater Blower Fan Switch and Wire Connector

Models:
1988-93 Pontiac Lemans and Optima (Canada)

When replacing the heater blower fan switch, the instrument panel wire harness connector that attaches to the switch may also have to be replaced. A new replacement jumper harness (P/N 22617988) has been released to provide a convenient fix for this condition.

Replacement of the blower switch should be done following the procedure specified in the Service Manual. However, if the mating wire harness connector needs replacement, the following procedure, using the new jumper harness (P/N 22617988), should be used:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable lead to the battery.

2. Record on a sheet of paper the positions of the different color coded wires in the existing wire connector.

Important:
All of the jumper wire leads in the kit are white in color.

3. Gut one wire at a time on the blower fan wire harness and splice that wire (using the recommended splicing procedure found in the LeMans Service Manual), to one of the wire leads found in the jumper harness connector kit. The wire lead in the kit may be shortened, as desired, to facilitate replacement of the switch into the instrument panel. After splicing the wire, insert the terminal end of the lead into the correct corresponding cavity of the new wire connector.

Important:
^ All wire splices will be one-wire to one-wire splices except for the lighting circuit ground wire (black wire). This circuit will require the wire leads from two cavities of the connector to be spliced together with the single black lighting circuit ground wire on the instrument panel harness. The existing wire connector on the car has a short jumper loop between the two cavities.

^ Some model year LeMans, depending on options, may not require all of the cavities of the replacement connector to be filled with wires.

4. Proceed with the splicing procedure until all of the wires have been spliced and inserted into the connector.

5. Verify that all of the wires have been inserted into the correct cavities of the connector.

6. Attach the connector to the blower fan switch.

7. Reconnect the negative battery lead to the battery.

8. Verify proper operation of the blower fan switch before inserting it back into the instrument panel.

Important:
The engine must be running to test for proper switch operation.
