SERVICE INFORMATION: (Figure 1 and 2)
The HYDRA-MATIC 4T60/4T60-E transaxle controlled compression bottom pan gasket (23/63) is reusable. This gasket can be identified by its rubber-like texture and metal frame (black in color). The controlled compression gasket can only be used with a transaxle bottom pan having a flat face along the pan rail.
NOTE:
The controlled compression bottom pan gasket went into production on June 24, 1991 (Julian Date 175) for all 4T60 transaxles. (Refer to Pontiac Service Bulletin 92-7-6 issued 2/92 for further information.)
The controlled compression bottom pan gasket went into production at the start of production for all 4T60-E transaxles.
When removing the bottom pan, (24/59) it is recommended to inspect the gasket for any possible leak points that may cause future concerns:
^ Cuts or tears in the rubber bead
^ Correct bottom pan bolt torque
- crushed due to over-torque
- leaking due to low-torque
If no discrepancies are found, wipe gasket with clean cloth and case and pan area with part solvent. Reinstall gasket and check for leaks using powder or black-light and dye method. (Refer to the appropriate service manual "Section 7A General Information and On-Vehicle Service" for information regarding fluid leak diagnosis.)
IMPORTANT:
The reusable bottom pan gasket for 4T60 and 4T60-E transaxles application should not be replaced during unit repair. The gasket should only be replaced when:
^ Rubber bead is cut, crimped, or crushed
^ Evidence of fluid seepage (with proper fastener torque)
Replacing a perfectly good, reusable gasket only adds an unnecessary expense to the repair.
