Subject:
TRANSAXLE FLUID LEAK AT CONVERTER SEAL (INSTALL NEW HELIX CONVERTER SEAL)
Models Affected:
1991-93 BONNEVILLE, GRAND PRIX AND TRANS SPORT MODELS W/4T60E
TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS:
1991-93 HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E (RPO M13)
TRANSAXLE MODELS:
ALL
CONDITION:
Some vehicles equipped with a 1991-93 HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E (RPO M13) transaxle built on or before Julian Date 302 (October 28, 1992) may exhibit a fluid leak between the helix converter seal and its bore. Under some conditions the helix converter seal may walk-out partially or completely. Hot weather and/or extreme operating conditions are contributing factors to this concern.
CAUSE:
The above condition may be due to the taper of the helix converter seal bore.
CORRECTION: (Figure 2)
Begin with the "Fluid Leak Diagnosis" ("Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service Section of the 1991-93 Service Manual") which provides a detailed procedure in locating and repairing vehicle leaks.
If it is determined the leak is from the helix converter seal, the following procedure must be performed:
* Remove helix converter seal taking care not to damage case bore.
* Clean case bore with parts cleaner and air dry.
* Apply a bead of LOCTITE 272 (or equivalent) at outer edge of converter seal. (This will insure a uniform coat of LOCTITE 272 (or equivalent) as helix seal is installed.)
* Install helix converter seal.
* Wait 30 minutes before exposing helix seal with LOCKTITE 272 (or equivalent) to DEXRON-IIE (ATF). A 24 hour cure time is required before vehicle should be started.
