Crankshaft

CRANKSHAFT

Clean
^ Oil, sludge and carbon.
^ Probe oil passages for obstructions.

Inspect
^ Keyway.
^ Threads.
^ Bearing journals and thrust surfaces for:
- Cracks.
- Chips.
- Gouges.
- Roughness.
- Grooves.
- Overheating (discoloration).
^ Corresponding bearing inserts for embedded foreign material and determine its source.

Important: If cracks, severe gouges or burned spots are found, the crankshaft must be replaced. Slight roughness may be removed with a fine polishing cloth soaked in clean engine oil. Burrs may be removed with a fine oil stone.

Measure:
Crankshaft journals. With a micrometer measure taper and run-out.
- If the readings are within specifications, note resuits for later selection of bearing inserts.
- If not within limits, the crankshaft must be replaced.

Important Note the location of main bearing high spots. If they are not in line, the crankshaft is bent and must be replaced.
