M/T - Hops Out of Gear, Mostly During Cold Temperatures

File In Section: 7 - Transmission
Bulletin No. 47-72-02
Date: December, 1994

Subject:
Manual Transmission Hops Out of Gear (Replace Inner Shift Boot Assembly)

Models:
1993-94 Chevrolet Camaro
1993-94 Pontiac Firebird with 5-Speed Manual Transmission (RPO M49) or 6-Speed Manual Transmission (RPOs M28, M29)

CONDITION
Customers may comment on a "hop out of gear" condition on their vehicle. This condition may be more noticeable during cold ambient temperature after a cold soak. The condition will improve as the vehicle interior temperature increases.

CAUSE
The condition may be caused by the inner shift boot assembly located within the center console. The rubber material in this inner boot assembly may experience a "set" after a cold soak during cold ambient temperature. This "set" may impair free movement of the manual transmission shifter lever due to increased stiffness as the ambient temperature becomes cooler.

For example, if the manual transmission shifter lever is engaged in first gear during a cold ambient soak, it may develop a "set" in that position and may tend to pull out of second gear during the next vehicle operation.

CORRECTION
A revised inner shift boot assembly is available to improve the above condition. This revised boot has a more flexible material. To repair the above condition, replace the inner shift boot assembly using the procedure described in Section 7B of the Service Manual.
